"The miracle on Broad Street"
The opera promoter Oscar Hammerstein erected The
Metropolitan Opera House (The Met) in 1908. By 1953, the Met
became a Worship Center (Philadelphia Evangelistic Center, also
known as The Met Church) under the leadership of the late Dr. Thea
F. Jones. During Dr. Jones' tenure the building was placed on the
national, state and local historic registers. From 1988 until
1995, the building was vacant and abandoned. Primary
electrical and plumbing systems suffered major damage due to
basement flooding. The building was looted and vandalized.
Dr. Mark Hatcher acquired ownership and stabilized the building for
use as the Holy Ghost Headquarters Revival Center at The Met. |
